Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI) has developed a rich suite of open and free (or nearly free) online courses. One of these forms the basis for CSUN’s hybrid Mathematics 140 course in Introductory Statistics. We will provide a brief overview of both this hybrid course and the OLI’s Statistical Reasoning course, which provides the content delivery for the hybrid class. A particular focus will be the extensive set of assessment tools provided by the OLI learning platform. Students in the hybrid Math 140 classes have on average outperformed those in other sections of Math 140.
