In the late 1960's the people of the United States began to sharply augment their intake of wine. From 1969 to 1972 per capita wine consumption in this country increased by an average of 12 percent per year. Increased consumption obviously meant that more wine had to be produced somewhere. The bulk of the new American demand was filled by the United States, rather than foreign sources, and within the United States the demand was met, to an overwhelming extent, by California producers. Three fourths of the wine drunk in the United States is made in California and the Golden State's response to the widening national market was immediate and spectacular. In the seven-year period from 1968 to 1975 California wineries nearly doubled their sales. During the same period acreage in winegrapes in California increased by 132 percent.
