  • This is a geographical appraisal of the Kaweah Co-operative, a socialist colony which was located 40 miles east of Visalia, California, in what is now Sequoia National Park. The Kaweah Colony was founded in 1885 by a group of San Francisco radicals led by Burnette Haskell in an attempt to demonstrate the superiority of socialist co-operation over capitalism. They settled the remote area along the Kaweah River, near the Giant Forest for its lumbering potential. Their plan was to undersell their capitalist lumbering competition and equally distribute profits among members.
