Remote sensing is a new and rapidly growing technology which, in the not too distant future, may have a profound impact on society as we know it. While the actual use of remote sensing instruments is nothing new, accelerated development and expansion of the capabilities and uses of remote sensing technology are a by-product of the United States' space program of the 1960's. Since that time, a number of satellites with sophisticated "sensing" instruments on board have been launched for the express purpose of providing scientists, educators, political decision makers, private industry, and others with a vast array of new knowledge about the earth's surface.
