  • Parochialism is an aspect of vernacular geographic thinking, "the product of the spatial perceptions of average people, the shared spontaneous images of territorial reality hovering in the minds of the untutored." Bollnow believes that each person has a "natural place" to which he or she belongs, and this place "can properly be called the zero point of his or her reference system." Shared knowledge of these "natural places" within a community leads to parochial place-naming.
