This study concerns a corollary of the crop substitution problem: the development of more dependable upland rice yields in order to lessen the need for growing and selling opium to replace shortfalls in this principal food crop. If rice yields can be improved, there should be an attendant reduction in the economic risk of switching from opium to other cash crops.
