  • This article presents an analysis of Alfred Thiessen's 1911 work which introduced geographers to the concept of Thiessen polygons, also known as Dirichlet regions or Voronoi polygons. The investigation reproduces Thiessen's example for precipitation data and reveals a remarkable, curious flaw. Although Thiessen described correctly the procedure for delineating the polygons, his example appears to have been mis-delineated, perhaps intentionally, such that the area-weighted average would yield precisely the some answer that would be obtained if the precipitation value was known everywhere. Possible reasons for this deception are considered, and a reconsideration of the polygons' name is recommended.
