Assessing knowledge of place name geography

Place name geography should be a basic skill for university level students. The purpose of this study is to identify whether university students possess basic place name geography skills. This study examines students at California State University at San Bernardino during the 1980's and their entry level ability to identify twenty countries on a world map. The average student could identify only half of the countries, and their performance level has decreased during a nine year time period.
