An investigation into the effect of the computer on the role of the middle manager

This thesis is an investigation into how the introduction of computers and electronic data processing {EDP ) have impacted the managerial functions of planning, staffing, organizing, directing, and controlling. Four modes of investigation were used. First, two company case studies were analyzed, one with an extensive computer installation and one with a minimum installation. Second, a questionnaire was mailed to members of the American Production and Inventory Society. Third, personal interviews were conducted with members of middle management in various fields of business . Fourth , an investigation was made into what current literature says regarding the impact of the computer on management. The closing chapter is a summary of what various authors are predicting for the future of business and management as a result of modern computer technology.
