Angels

Since early childhood, the dramatic mountains and omnipotent seas of the Pacific Northwest have appeared alive to me, like bizarre spirits. These geologic, cartoon visions are symbolic of transience, destruction, and metamorphosis. I realized this when I saw the Nootka Indian totems of British Columbia, Canada. While working in the remote rainforests of British Columbia, I came face to face with totems decaying on damp, moss-laden forest floors that bordered iodine-rich ocean beaches. Like fallen sentinels, they appeared to me as a visionary expression of the transience of all things. (See more in text.)
