WHY I PAINT I paint in order to feel a sense of being. To stop painting would be to stop living – how a painting proceeds effects me deeply. Any successful gambit while painting is greeted by me with feelings of elation; while any unsuccessful passage throws me into a desperate mood which continues until the particular painting problem is solved. Ideas come to me subconsciously. Perhaps they serve as a synthesis of my esoteric life and inner experiences. I strive for results that will invite close inspection and will rivet the eye of the beholder to the surface. An objective of my painting is to endow the subject with a hallucinatory quality that transcends reality. Eventually the painting should succeed in having a reality of its own. (See more in text.)
