Accessibility of selected recreational facilities in Orange County

This project is a survey that examined several factors of accessibility for the disabled in Orange County. The disabled populations for which the information is intended are: 1) wheelchair bound, 2) blind, 3) deaf. There is a need for this information so that the disabled can participate on a par with the non-disabled. The information of this project is useful to therapeutic recreators and the disabled in planning for their participation. The intention of selected facilities was to locate and identify the facilities that offer mainstreaming value. One hundred site visits were made to the following types of facilities: 1) bowling lanes, 2) ice and roller skating rinks, 3) legitimate and movie theaters, 4) amusement parks, 5) museums and 6) zoos. The accessibility in these facilities was of the parking lots, entrances, restrooms, drinking fountains, telephones, and braille and sign language service availability. It was found that accessibility is limited. Adequate compliance to remove the architectural barriers has not been attained. It is in part the design of the survey to increase the awareness of the disabled and non-disabled of the accessibility of recreation facilities in their community.
