Parents as collaborators in education (PACE) : training parents of children at-risk to be active participants of a collaborative education team

This pilot project examined the feasibility of training parents to be effective members of their children's collaborative educational team. The subjects were 14 parents whose children were placed in special education programs for the learning handicapped. These parents, along with 2 regular education teachers and the site administrator, attended 8 one-hour training sessions once a week for 8 weeks. These sessions taught parents to use classroom methodology at home and to work effectively with school personnel in helping their children better succeed in school. Results indicate parents can be trained to utilize classroom methodology in the home setting. Moreover, parents will use these methods to help their children. Furthermore, such training encouraged parents to take a more active role in their children's education by participating in IEP meetings and requesting conferences with teachers more frequently.
