Design of digital controller utilizing proximate time optimal servomechanism (PTOS) for hard disk system

This project involves the design of servo position controller for a rigid disk drive system. Position system encountered high data error rate mainly due to the difficulty in controlling the read/write head's position. In order to achieve low bit error rate, a microprocessor based position control system was designed using "Proximate Time Optimal Servomechanism" (PTOS) scheme. The advantage of PTOS scheme over other digital servo scheme is that we can move the actuator fast enough during Velocity, Track Following operation, without losing robustness properties of Voice Coil and Head Disk Assembly (HDA) dynamics to measurement noise and disturbance. Simulation of the proposed digital servo controller was done on industry standard MATRIX-X/SYSTEMBUILD software, to confirm that the proposed controller successfully achieved the constraints and specifications.
