Supporting Grieving Children in the Classroom: Are Teachers Prepared?

One common thread between all children of all cultures is the experience of grief. Whether it is the death of family, friends, or pets, the process of divorce, or even moving away, children experience grief. Although grief is normal for children to experience, there is no formal training or required classes for degree programs given to teaching professionals to better prepare them to support grieving children in the classroom. This thesis explores the benefits and importance of providing formal grief training to teaching professionals, which in turn may better prepare teachers with supporting grieving children in the classroom. Teachers spend more than half the day building a bond and relationship with the children in their classroom, so who better to support children than the teacher.
