8th Annual Environmental and Occupational Health Technical Symposium 2013: Nanomaterials: Implications for Environmental and Occupational Health

Nanotechnology, the science of the extremely tiny (one nanometer is one-billionth of a meter), is an important emerging industry with a projected annual market of one trillion US dollars by 2015. It involves the control of atoms and molecules to create new materials with a variety of useful functions. However, concerns are growing that it may have hazardous effects to living organisms and the environment. Metallic nanomaterials are increasingly used in manufacturing processes and consumer products and processes such as in the production, safety and packaging of food. They also have widespread use in paints, cosmetics, sunscreen, pharmaceuticals, tires, aircraft, etc. Our symposium will examine the topic of metallic nanomaterials from the perspective of environmental and occupational health and safety. A wide range of topics will be covered, such as the manufacture and utility of metallic nanomaterials, the health effects associated with exposures, risk assessment, exposure assessment and engineering controls. Our Technical Symposium includes a line-up of nationally recognized speakers encompassing the areas of environmental and occupational health, and regulatory requirements. All profits will be used to support ongoing educational opportunities for students, labs and operations in the CSUN Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. Pre-registration fees are $75 for EOH Alumni Chapter Members and $85 for non-members. Pre-registration includes complimentary parking and a buffet lunch. Registration at the door is $100 and does not include parking ($6) or lunch. Attendees must pre-register by March 1, 2013 to secure lunch and free parking. Please register on-line at  www.csunalumni.com/eohtechsym2013 or by phone at (818) 677-2137 in advance to reserve your discount rate and lunch. Although students may attend at no charge, we request they register by March 1, 2013. Students may also pay $15 when they pre-register if they wish to participate in the buffet lunch. Other lunch facilities are available in the USU quad complex. The Symposium will be held in the CSUN University Student Union Building, Northridge Center Complex. Pre-registered attendees may obtain their complimentary parking permit from the Information Booth at Student Lot G-3 on Zelzah Avenue (directions and map on the next page). Registrants paying at the door and students without parking permits pay $6 for parking at the same Information Booth or via Parking Permit Vending Machines in Student Lot G-3 again on Zelzah Avenue.
