Recreation and Tourism Management Department Annual Assessment Report to the College 2016-2017

Abstract

The Recreation and Tourism Management department 2016-17 annual assessment report to the College of Health and Human Development for the Office of Academic Assessment and Program Review. Reporting on assessments from AY 2014-15 to Fall 2016, the report describes an assessment of all five program SLOs in 2014-15 via portfolio evaluations, internship preceptor evaluations, core confidence surveys, a Core Knowledge Test, and an Emotional Intelligence Survey, in alignment with the requirements of National Recreation and Park Association Accreditation (COAPRT), an accrediting agency. Results show a mean score of 3.2/5 on the Senior Seminar Portfolio evaluation, which is described as being "slightly below" benchmark; an overall score of 3.7/4 on the internship preceptor evaluation, which is described as satisfactory; an overall score of 2.34/3 on the student core course confidence self-survey, which is described as high, with the exception of student confidence in coursework in RTM 204, which is described as moderate; a 50.5/100 average student score on a pre-test administration of the Core Knowledge Test and a 55.8/100 score on the post-test, which is described as an improvement but still low for the post-test; and pre-survey/post-survey scores of 4.26/5 and 4.38/5, respectively, on the Emotional Intelligence Survey, an improvement described as "minor." In response to the "poor" performance on the Core Knowledge Test, students are being assisted in study strategies, and an analysis of the test itself and its methodology has been undertaken.
