Get kids moving: a model afterschool sports program promoting healthy lifestyles

National attention has turned to the growing numbers of children who are overweight and obese. The United States government, along with over local and state government agencies, have raised alarm bells regarding the dangers our nation faces due to the rising weight of children. Local communities across the country are searching for answers and new ways that they can promote healthy lifestyles to children and young adults. Intervention programs exist in different pockets of the nation, however there does not currently exist a model program that other communities can learn from and use as a template to create and develop their own sports-based healthy lifestyle program. This project responds to the need for more healthy lifestyle intervention programs. It explores the successes and challenges of the OneGlendale after-school youth sports program, as well as the impact the program has had on student health and achievement. It includes a website with resources that can be shared and contributed to for others looking to create their own program based on this model.
