Moral-spiritual infrastructure: Touchstone of movement-building community organizing

One of my most memorable experiences in the early years of my community organizing, which turned out to be an omen, happened while door knocking in a neighborhood organizing drive. It was before faith based organizing came on strong. After knocking on hundreds of doors, it occurred to me that a lot of folks were responding to my pitch without regard to their immediate self-interest, which was the first axiom of neighborhood organizing, as I had learned it. But my natural inclination was also to encourage talk about "what we really believe in," "our deepest values," and "our hopes and dreams." The responses were often enthusiastic and emotional, and they affected me deeply
