The Stigma of Mental Health within Communities of Color

In the recent years, individuals of color have become more outspoken towards the representation of mental health concerns within their communities. However, there is an issue when it comes to the lack of representation for mental health needs within those communities. Although there are barriers to face within the communities of color such as stigmas, opportunity for education and representation of color will allow for those barriers to be broken. The purpose of this study is to navigate the idea that by normalizing mental health services and being comfortable with such needs, communities of color can break the mental health stigma and begin to heal, whether it be within one's own circle of family or friends, in an educational institution, or the work force. To better understand how to deal with the stigma of mental health in all settings, a scoping literature review was conducted to identify how stigma can be eliminated and begin to focus on normalizing mental health education and resources for communities of color in a household setting, school setting, and workplace setting. Following the Preferred Reporting Items (PRISMA) guidelines, five electronic databases were searched using key words: Latinos, Latinx, mental health, stigma. Keywords: Latinos, Latinx, mental health, stigma
