Masters Thesis

Effective pedagogy and teaching practices when working with chican@ students

While Chican@ students have been historically denied equal access to education, many have managed to navigate this complex educational system from kindergarten all the way to institutions of higher education. Research demonstrates that teachers play an influential role in mitigating the Chican@ "educational problem." Therefore, rather than falling into a narrative about the resiliency or "ganas" of Chican@ students who do succeed academically as the sole explanation of their upward mobility, the focus of this thesis is to investigate and highlight the practices of an effective teacher of low-income Chican@ students within a primarily dominated Chican@ high school.
