dc.description Describes the Africana Studies department's assessment activities for academic year 2015-2016. en
dc.description.abstract In its third year of implementation of a program-wide set of modifications, the department focused on an assessment of the results of its modifications, an evaluation of the core requirements for all program options, reviewing its PSLOs, and assessing the university 5 Core Competencies as aligned with program SLOs as taught in four courses (AFRS 100, 300, 398, & 498). Direct assessment of 3 PSLOs in a section of AFRS 100 via a research paper shows an "above average introductory level of knowledge" of the core program learning outcomes. Core competency assessments were conducted via rubric scored research proposals, research papers, oral presentations and debates, group research projects, including literature reviews, and final examinations. Results show 100% of students (n=14) demonstrating an outstanding ability in quantitative literacy (19.42/20), above average scores in information literacy and oral communication (ave. 85/100), average scores in critical thinking (ave. 11/15), and above average scores in written communication (ave. 86/100). Detailed descriptions of assessment procedures and results are included in the report. A cross-sectional assessment of entry-to-capstone learning outcomes via final exam results show all students performing at an "above satisfactory" level in AFRS 498 (with 40% "exceptional" and 40% "very high"). "Value added" from entrance to capstone is described as revealing "an overall increase in students' mastery of the AFRS undergraduate program SLOs." Indirect assessment reveals 100% of students reporting departmental extracurricular programming to be "very" or "extremely" useful. A revision of the program's SLOs was also completed and detailed results reported. Plans for AY 2016-17 include assessments of Stretch Writing (AFRS 113B, 114B & 115), all 5 new PSLOs, all 5 university core competencies, and surveys of graduating seniors and program alumni. In addition, an assessment of student preparedness at entrance is also projected to enhance student success. en
